About 33 million people were living with human immunodeficiency virus infections in , most of them in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert, according to the United Nations report on the AIDS epidemic. Global deaths from AIDS reached an estimated 2 million in , down from 2. Global AIDS deaths peaked in at 2. The total number of people living with HIV infections continues to inch higher as more and more people in hard-hit regions like sub-Saharan Africa get access to drugs that help them live longer, the report showed. The number of people who became newly infected with HIV, which ravages the immune system, was basically the same in as in — at around 2. The number of newly infected people peaked at 3. Paul De Lay said.
Bush and Gen. David Petraeus discussed the status of the new strategy in Iraq, which both men have recently said is beginning to show signs of success. There’s also been a decline in sectarian violence. Bush said Petraeus will meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill later Monday to brief them on “what’s going right and what’s not going right. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said that Congress will no longer “turn a blind eye to the Bush administration’s incompetence and dishonesty.

Tiffany G. Harris, Jiehui Li, David B. Hanna, Sonal S. During the study period, the age of HIV-infected tuberculosis patients increased, and greater proportions were female, non-Hispanic black, Asian, and foreign born; the proportion that was non-Hispanic white decreased. Similar trends for culture, site of disease, and drug resistance were seen for HIV-uninfected tuberculosis patients. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics changed substantially among HIV-infected tuberculosis patients in New York City.
Awareness of these changes may speed diagnosis of tuberculosis. The proportion of tuberculosis patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus HIV has also decreased, although HIV infection remains common. Besides the increased risk of tuberculosis among HIV-infected persons, historically, HIV-infected tuberculosis patients were more likely to present with atypical clinical characteristics, including a reduced likelihood of having a cavitary lesion, a reduced likelihood of having a radiographic appearance consistent with primary tuberculosis, and a higher likelihood of having extrapulmonary disease; these characteristics were more pronounced with increasing immunosuppression [ 2—9 ].
However, another recent study found that cavitary lesions remained less common and extrapulmonary tuberculosis remained more common among HIV-infected tuberculosis patients, compared with the corresponding prevalences for HIV-uninfected tuberculosis patients in the United States [ 12 ].

HIV/AIDS: Snapshots of an Epidemic
The current outbreak of novel coronavirus has prompted an upsurge of fear, stigma and virus-shaming that is all too familiar to people living with HIV. For health care providers and other front-line professionals serving people with HIV, this means not only the added burden of managing the outbreak among their patients and clients, but also the opportunity to alleviate panic and keep those they serve well-informed.
We’ll share recently released information from U. Until mid-April, there was a dearth of scientific literature exploring the intersection between HIV infection and the novel coronavirus or COVID, the disease it causes. Since then, a few dozen case reports and other relevant studies, most of them small, have trickled into medical journals. This has restricted not only an accurate count of the number of people infected, but also the accumulation of reliable epidemiological data including COVID geographical trends, hospitalization rates, and risk factors—as well as research regarding novel coronavirus transmission risks and outcomes among people living with HIV.
But the vast preponderance of the data availabile suggest that people living with HIV are not inherently more at risk for coronavirus infection than the general population, nor are they inherently more at risk for death or for experiencing a more severe course of COVID relative to HIV-negative individuals.
There is no evidence to support any protective benefit to antiretroviral therapy.

In the West, those most at risk are men who have sex with men owing to a combination of social factors and, ironically, improved healthcare. The acquired immune deficiency syndrome AIDS pandemic that started more than 30 years ago remains one of the greatest public-health concerns worldwide: in , it was estimated that Although the availability of efficient diagnostics and highly active antiretroviral therapy HAART have drastically improved life expectancy and quality of life—at least in those parts of the world where both are available and affordable—HAART does not cure the disease.
Moreover, despite massive research efforts, there is no efficient vaccine on the market to protect against infection with HIV. Given the lack of either a vaccine or a cure, the main public-health intervention to halt the pandemic is to prevent viral transmission in the first place. In fact, the transmission of HIV is not as efficient as other, more resistant blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses HBV and HCV , and it requires direct contact of blood or semen from an infected person with the blood system of the exposed person.
This feature puts certain groups at greater risk of transmission: heterosexuals with many sexual partners, including sex workers, men who have sex with men MSM—a technical term used by health professionals to avoid forcing individuals to define themselves in a specific sexuality , people who inject drugs, newborns of HIV-infected mothers, blood recipients and healthcare workers. Yet, the risk of infection differs for each of these groups.
There is also a geographical dimension to the risk, as different parts of the world have unique epidemiological characteristics, reflecting biological, behavioural and socio-economic factors.

NCBI Bookshelf. Our plan had been to focus on three cities, New York, Miami, and Sacramento, to determine the epidemic’s impacts in places with quite different social, cultural, and demographic characteristics. Unfortunately, it proved logistically and financially difficult to carry out this plan. Fortunately, however, since several members of the panel lived or worked in New York and had convened for regular discussions over the several years of the panel’s life a group of experienced observers of the epidemic, the panel was able to complete one of its planned empirical studies, that of New York City.

Young people using Tinder could soon trigger a surge in HIV cases because they’re more likely to have anal sex and change partners regularly. An NHS sexual health consultant has warned of a ‘chain reaction’ of HIV cases if dating app-obsessed millennials don’t make sure they use condoms. Apps like Tinder make it easier for people to switch sexual partners quickly, meaning they can catch more STIs.
And internet porn is increasing the number of straight couples having anal sex, Dr Peter Greenhouse said, which is more likely to spread HIV. The rising numbers of people using Tinder and other online dating apps could contribute to a surge in HIV cases unless they’re ‘meticulous’ about using condoms, an expert in Bristol has warned, because anal sex and frequently changing partners are becoming more common. Dr Greenhouse, a sexual health consultant in Bristol, said there could be an ‘explosion’ of cases of the incurable infection.
He told the Daily Star : ‘I worry in the grand scheme of things that if enough young heterosexual people change partners frequently enough and have unprotected sex then at some point there is going to be quite a bit more HIV around in the heterosexual community. The NHS has already seen a rise in more treatable infections, which some experts have pinned on the rise of dating apps. Before apps such as Tinder, people had to meet face-to-face before agreeing to have sex, and would have been more likely to be embarrassed about casual relations.
And Dr Greenhouse added a generation of young people who are learning about sex from internet porn are more likely to have unprotected or anal sex. The two together could cause a ‘nuclear reaction’ of spreading HIV, he said, because people can switch partners within days when it most infectious. Clinics are ‘struggling’ to cope with soaring numbers of STIs because dating apps are encouraging casual sex, an expert warned last month.
